Tottenham 1-0 Burnley: Eriksen scores as Spurs overcome resilient Burnley

Christian Eriksen came off the bench to score a stoppage time winner.

Burnley were looking impressive as they lined up in a 541 doemantion and frustrated the hosts.

Pochettino turned to his sub bench and it was the Danish international who finished well to give Tottenham all three points.

Tottenham move five points off top of the league and can now be seen as genuine title contenders.

Goalkeeper: Joe Hart- Surprisingly he didn’t have much to do but made two good saves and will be gutted he didn’t get a clean sheet.

Right Back: Phil Bardsley- He kept Lucas Moura in his back pocket and he was strong in his tackles.

Centre Back: Ben Davies- Davies was playing in the unnatural position of CB. He was incredibly composed and he filled the void of Vertonghen impressively. Man of the match.

Centre Back: James Tarkowski- In my opinion he is one of the most underrated defenders in the league. He won everything in the air today.

Left Back: Danny Rose- He will be disappointed by his performance as he didn’t make any surging runs but he gets in the team due to the lack of competition from Charlie Taylor.

Centre Mid: Oliver Skipp: The addition of the 18 year-old was very surprising but he played incredibly for his debut. He was dominant in the air, made crucial tackles and kept the game ticking.

Centre Mid: Moussa Sissoko: A decent performance from the Frenchman. He did the basics right and didn’t do much wrong.

Centre Mid: Christian Eriksen- He came on with not much long left of the game but he got the all important goal, with a late strike. In his short time on the pitch he definitely made his presence known.

Right Mid: Aaron Lennon- He did the dirty work for Burnley today and he constantly got back to support Bardsley. He contributed with four big tackles.

Left Mid: Dele Alli- Alli kept trying throughout the game and although nothing came off, his passion and creativity can not be questioned.

Striker: Harry Kane- Is he in the combined eleven every week? He surely is and again he came up with the goods to get the assist for their goal. Who doesn’t love ‘arry’?

A bad day at the office for; Lucas Moura

A frustrating afternoon for the man who was rewarded with a start after getting Tottenham through to the Champions League knockout stages. He couldn’t get past Charlie Taylor and it seems like his Tottenham counterparts neglected him as he didn’t receive the ball from them. I don’t think he had the creativity to break down the Burnley defence.

It was a tough afternoon for Spurs against the resilient Burnley defence. They packed their defence in a 541 formation and Tottenham lacked creativity and imagination to break through. Players like Christian Eriksen were neglected to the sub bench and they desperately needed his skill and vision. However, it did feel it would be inevitable that Tottenham would score as they usually are able to break down tough opposition.

I was pleasantly surprised to see young Oliver Skipp feature. He was making his first full premier league debut and he certainly impressed. He was strong in the tackle, won balls in the air and even more impressively he had the attitude and patience to be calm on the ball. He seems to be a mix of Harry Winks and Eric Dier and I think he could start to become a crucial squad player for Tottenham this season.

A lot was said surrounding Tottenham’s lack of spending this summer but it’s Spurs’ youth setup that keeps on supplying their first team. Perhaps Skipp could be the next graduate.

All in all, Tottenham deserved the win today but they weren’t at their best. But the best teams always win when they aren’t at it and that is exactly what they did today. Burnley should be proud of their effort and application as they gave it their all and were so unlucky to not get a point.

Goodwin Out!
