This week marks the first set of midweek Premier League fixtures this season. Newcastle face Everton on Wednesday night following disappointing results for both sides at the weekend.
Newcastle lost 3-0 at home to West Ham on Saturday, despite creating a number of good opportunities throughout the match. Javier Hernandez gave the away side the lead following a superb cross from Robert Snodgrass, and the Mexican would go on to double the lead in the second half with a low finish from a one-on-one. Felipe Anderson had another good performance for the Hammers and rounded the game off in the 93rd with a driven strike which went through Dubravka’s legs.
Everton, meanwhile, took on Merseyside rivals Liverpool. Praise had been heaped on Everton and Marco Silva before the game due to their offensive style of play this season, and to their credit Everton didn’t disappoint at Anfield. There were chances at both ends but Everton looked to have come closest with Yerry Mina’s close ranged headed miss and Andre Gomes’ effort being cleared off the line. However, Liverpool would win the game in the 96th minute. Van Dijk’s volley looped up onto the crossbar, but Pickford opted not to tip the ball over his bar. This error of judgement saw the ball drop to Origi in front of goal and he headed the ball in to Pickford’s and Everton’s dismay.
Newcastle will travel to Goodison Park on Wednesday night with hopes of taking something back to Newcastle. Everton are currently sixth in the league and looked impressive under Silva, so Benitez’s Newcastle will need a good performance to take something from Wednesday’s game.
