Sunderland AFC 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers: Sloppy Sunderland’s winning run come to an end

Sunderland’s winning run came to an end on Saturday as Wycombe Wanderers were unlucky not to leave will all three points. Josh Maja came off the bench to rescue a point for the Black Cats on what was an off day for Jack Ross’ side.

As was expected, there were wholesale changes for Sunderland. The eleven changes included Dylan McGeouch and captain George Honeyman coming back in to sit in front of the back four and just behind the attacking midfield trip of Aiden McGeady, Lyndon Gooch and Chris Maguire. Jerome Sinclair led the line with top scorner Maja and Max Power amongst the substitutes.

Sunderland line-up:

McGeough Honeyman

Gooch Maguire McGeady

With Portsmouth not playing due to international commitments, Sunderland had an ideal chance to go top of the league with a win over the Chairboy’s. They made a decent start, creating the first half chance of the contest. Lyndon Gooch won the ball back in the middle of the park and he found Aiden McGeady.  The Irishman created space for himself before firing high and wide from inside the penalty area.

At the other end the visitors were beginning to grow into the match. a corner was played into the box and had captain Adam El-Abd got just a bit more of his head onto the end of it then Wycombe would have had the lead much earlier. Minutes later Fred Onyedinma made a run at the Sunderland backline before flashing a shot into the side netting.

McGeady should have done better just before half time but he could only manage to fire his effort well wide of the mark from a fairly good position.  The lack of quality in the first half made sure it was goalless at the break.

Mid way through the second half the visitors got their much-deserved lead. A routine freekick into the Sunderland penalty area wasn’t dealt with by the hosts and Onyedinma had all the time in the world to control and fire home past a helpless Jon McLaughlin. 0-1 and nothing less than Wycombe deserve.

The black cats continued to fall short in front of goal until five minutes from time. Josh Maja controlled the ball well inside the penalty area before placing the ball into the bottom corner out of the reach of several Wycombe defenders.

It was a disappointing display, but it is one which the Black Cats need to put behind them to make sure they keep taps on the other promotion chasing sides.
