Lincoln City will make the long trip down to Essex this weekend to face play-off chasing Colchester United.
The Imps come into the game, still sat top of Sky Bet League Two but have since had their lead cut. They are now just three points clear of second placed MK Dons.
The cut in the lead is thanks to back to back home draws with Cambridge United and Carlisle United. The Imps would have been expecting six points to add to their tally but the visitors on both occasions earned a good point.
Colchester come into the tie on the back of a defeat to Lincoln’s rivals Grimsby Town on Tuesday night. Wes Thomas’ strike was enough to sink John McGreal’s men. It was a real opportunity for the Essex side to climb to 4th with Newport only managing a draw away at Bury.
The last time these two sides met was towards the back end of last season in a crucial game in the play-off picture. Elliott Whitehouse tucked a penalty away to give the Imps the lead before Courtney Senior leveled things. Michael Bostwick was sent off for the hosts with just ten to play. Captain Luke Waterfall scored the winner with the last kick of the game as he stole a march on the Colchester keeper and towered his header into the net.
The Imps will have their injury concerns ahead of the trip down to Colchester. Lee Frecklington is yet to return to action following a nasty collision at Port Vale whereas Neal Eardley was forced off early on Tuesday night with questions hanging over his availability.
