Christian Doidge scored with five minutes to go as Bolton came from behind to earn a hard fought point against Rotherham United with a 1-1 draw at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.
Will Vaulks’ fierce strike from a 25 yard free-kick saw the Millers take the lead but Doidge’s late goal earned Wanderers a unlikely point.
It was a positive start by Rotherham United when a good piece of persistence by Ryan Williams won the Millers a corner, Jon Taylor took the set-piece and Semi Ajayi could only head over the bar.
It was a terrific start by Rotherham as Vaulks’ long throw into the area caused problems but David Wheater managed to clear, before a long ball over the top by Vaulks looking for Michael Smith was headed back by Jack Hobbs to his own keeper Ben Alnwick.
Bolton’s first chance came when Joe Williams was felled by Ajayi, but Gary O’Neil’s set-piece was headed over the bar by Josh Magennis.
The visitors won a free-kick for a foul by Ajayi on Clayton Donaldson but it was a poor set-piece and behind for a goal-kick, before Richard Wood felled Donaldson and Hobbs glanced an header over the bar.
Williams then sent Donaldson away down the right and his cut-back was cleared by Vaulks. At the other end, Wood saw an header tipped behind for a corner from which Taylor’s effort hit the side netting via a deflection.
Joe Mattock with this corner but Bolton cleared only as far as Taylor who fired over, before another Mattock corner was headed wide by Kyle Vassell from six-yards.
Williams then showed some good touches before Josh Vela conceded a corner which was a dangerous set-piece by Mattock but the visitors cleared, another long-throw from Vaulks was cleared by Wheater and it hit Vassell and went out for a throw.
Before the break, Williams won the Millers a free-kick which was taken by Mattock and Smith couldn’t find the target as his header goes wide.

It was the visitors who started the brighter as Wood brought down Magennis and the referee pointed to the spot, Marek Rodak flung himself to his left to deny Magennis from 12 yards.
Taylor then broke into down field but his cross hit a Bolton box and referee waved away appeals for handball, at the other end, Mattock crossed well towards Taylor but the visitors cleared.
Seconds later the hosts opened the scoring, Williams was felled and from 25-yards Vaulks fired home into the bottom corner, the effort left Alnwick with no chance.
Smith then tried to double the hosts advantage but his fierce drive towards goal was kept out at the near post by Alnwick, at the other end, Vela delivered a corner which Wheater heads towards goal, it was half cleared before a shot went well wide from the visitors.
A dangerous cross from Taylor almost found Vaulks but Bolton cleared before, some good covering challenge from Richie Towell as Bolton broke.
Vaulks then fired an effort well wide from 25 yards before good work by Taylor whose cross was headed wide by Williams, at the other end, Rodak punched clear as the visitors threatened.
Taylor then saw an effort blocked before Joe Newell crossed towards Smith who felled his man, before a terrific effort from 25 yards from Smith curled onto the post and Bolton clear, at the other end, Ryan Manning went down in the area and the referee adjudged him to have dived and booked the Millers loanee.
Williams was pushed to the ground and Newell’s free-kick was cleared by Magennis, at the other end a good swift counter attack from the visitors ended with Doidge slotting into the bottom corner with a low effort.
Following good work by Williams he found Manning whose effort went wide, just before the break Mattock saw a booking for a foul.
There were four minutes of added time for either side to grab a late winner in this encounter, in stoppage time, Newell’s free-kick was cleared by Bolton who tried to get a late winner themselves but to no avil.
That result means Rotherham have drawn three of their last four home Sky Bet Championship games and head to the Riverside on Tuesday to take on Middlesbrough.
