Carlisle Preview vs Grimsby

After a disappointing defeat on Saturday to start this weeks Brunton Park double-header, John Sheridan will hope to galvanize his team for the visit of Grimsby.

Saturdays defeat at Stevenage followed a similar pattern of late; a failure to pick up points in two successive games.

Nonetheless, Carlisle can still regain the momentum with a victory at home to Grimsby as they are only three points of the top four in what it is an early tight and compact League Two table.

A fantastic effort from Stevenage’s Ben Kennedy was enough to see off Carlisle, while Grimsby’s grim form continued with a 2-1 defeat at home to Morecambe.

A response will be expected from Carlisle and expectations are still high enough that the Blues must win this game.

The opposition

Grimsby’s woeful start to the season continued on Saturday, extending their losing streak to six successive league games.

Their only sole victory so far came in the second game against Macclesfield, who are at the bottom of the table and are winless so far.

Even worse for Grimsby, One goal in six games and 12 conceded makes pretty embarrassing reading…

Grimsby also lost this fixture on both occasions last season so they will have to rely on Carlisle not being on their game yet again.

Head-to-head

  • Carlisle won both meetings last season, ending a run of 10 years without victory against the Mariners.
  • All the meetings between the sides in the last 30 years have come in the Fourth division, or the Cup.
  • Grimsby have won twice as many meetings as Carlisle, winning on 22 occasions to Carlisle’s 11.

Previous line-ups

Carlisle: Collin, Liddle, Gerrard, Parkes, Gillsesphey, Sowerby, Etuhu, Devitt, Hope, Bennett, Nadasen.

Grimsby: Mckeown, Davis, Whitmore, Collins, Hendrie, Embleton, Woolford, Welsh, Hesenthaler, Thomas, Cook

Carlisle team news

Jerry Yates will see out the last of his ban for abusive language against Bury, with Jack Sowerby replacing him in the last game.

Mike Jones will finally be in contention this week after a month out, though it may be more likely he will appear in the Oldham game next Saturday.

Prediction:

Carlisle 2-0 Grimsby
