After back to back league games at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland travel to Burton Albion in the hopes of getting back to winning ways. Two draws on the bounce may have extended their unbeaten run further, but Jack Ross will be looking for an improved performance at the Pirelli Stadium.
The Black Cats look set to have a near fully fit squad. Denver Hume and Jack Baldwin had picked up knocks, but Ross confirmed in his pre-match press conference that both have trained so they should be fit. The right back position is proving to be a headache for Ross with Donald Love and Adam Matthews having struggled in that position. With a range of defenders fully fit, there’s the chance Tom Flanagan could fit into this position with Jack Baldwin and Glen Loovens in the heart of the defence for the game at his former club. Aiden McGeady could make his long-awaited return to the squad, a place on the bench may be his.
With both Josh Maja and Charlie Wyke finding form, Ross may be tempted to play them in the same side. whether its 4-4-2 or a more familiar 4-2-3-1 which has been preferred this season. Sunderland are becoming swollen with attacking options, tough decisions are on the horizon for Jack Ross.
My Sunderland line-up:
Flanagan Baldwin Loovens Oviedo
Maguire Cattermole Honeyman Gooch
The last visit to the Pirelli was a rare happy day in an otherwise poor campaign for Sunderland. Despite both sides being relegated last season, Burton had a slightly better campaign and their win at the Stadium of Light in April confirmed Sunderland’s relegation. In League One it should be a much more even contest. The Brewers have had a much tamer start to the campaign as their visitors on Saturday, winning just two of their opening seven matches. Liam Boyce has bagged four goals so far this season and will be easily the biggest threat for the hosts.
Sunderland won their last two trips on the road after coming from behind. These were followed by two more matches where they fell behind early on. It’s becoming an issue for the Black Cats, if it continues then their luck will surely run out.
It will be another testing away day for Sunderland and three points may be too much to ask for. However, with potentially two inform strikers playing up top then goals should be a plenty. Stick this on your goals buster for the weekends matches.
Prediction: Burton Albion 2-2 Sunderland AFC
